1987 Bertone X1/9

This moderated subforum is for cars for sale. If you'd like to post your 996 (or other) vehicle, feel free. However, posts will be vetted. Please don't be stupid with your money...the guy selling that PERFECT Turbo for $22K probably has a Nigerian IP address.

1987 Bertone X1/9

Post by FRUNKenstein » Wed Oct 30, 2019 2:49 pm

OK, I planned on selling this on BringATrailer.com, but those bastards rejected it. So, I'll give it a shot on selling it myself. If you want to know all about the car, here's a link to the thread I started back when I bought it: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=690

93,xxx miles. I just replaced both of the speedometer cables. I put new tires, new brake pads, new brake rotors in it. I changed the oil & filter. I pulled everything out of the interior, cleaned, replaced missing hardware. I dyed the cloth parts of the seats and the door panels graphite gray as they had faded badly. Replaced the stereo with a bluetooth model with hands-free telephone. I went looking for rust and found just a small amount of surface rust here and there (under the battery box, under the frunk carpet). I treated cleaned and treated those spots with rust eliminator. I detailed the engine. I did little things like replacing the alternating cooling duct. I put it up on my lift and went all around the underside.

I have not replaced the timing belt, but the good news is that the 1500 cc engine in this car is a non-interference engine (the earlier 1300 cc however is a different story). So, if the timing belt does break on the 1500 cc engine, it's not the end of the world. Here's a link to a detailed DIY:
https://xwebforums.com/wiki/index.php/StaticTiming . After doing a timing belt/water pump on my 928, this looks like a fairly easy one.

Autocheck shows no accident history and I see no indication that it's ever been in an accident. It was sold new in California. I found the original registration receipt behind the glovebox when I was detailing the interior. Autocheck shows it was owned by the same guy from 1992 to 2018. Then a 2 month owner and a 6 month owner before I bought it in May 2019.

According to the man I bought it from, he bought it from his friend who was the 2 month owner. That 2 month owner was the son of the 26 year owner, and the 2 month owner inherited it after his father died. The 26 year owner was supposedly a Fiat mechanic. The 2 month owner was a millenial who did the matte black paint job (with gloss black accents and lower half). The original factory color was black, so it wouldn't be too difficult to take it back to the factory gloss black. I think the matte black looks good. It's a decent paint job, but I suspect it was a DIY job rather than a professional one due to some runs in the gloss coat on the lower part of the car.

The price: $6,000. Full disclosure - I paid $3,800 for it, but was shocked that it sold that cheap. The man I bought it from was a native of Thailand and he didn't speak English very well and the ebay ad was horrible. I thought it should have sold for twice that. After paying for shipping and the tires and rotors and brakes and all of the other miscellaneous parts and supplies, $6,000 is what I've got into it. And that's not counting the value of my labor for all of the work I've done. I think that's a great deal for this car. And I couldn't buy another one in this condition for near that. If no one wants it, I'll just hang onto it. It is a fun little car and I've enjoyed re-living my high school and college memories from when I had my 1977 X1/9. It's a definite crowd gatherer at any cars and coffee. It will come with a Kansas City Automotive Museum reader board from when it was on display in the museum. I also have a bunch of vintage literature for it - sales brochures, warranty flyers, etc. Let me know if you're interested.

Well, there's a guy who's offered the carpet lint gathered from a 993, so you've got to top that.

I would buy that in a heartbeat but the wife would kill me. I just sold my Zcar and almost have all our vehicles in a garage. It is sweet looking. You've done a good job with it. GLWS...screw BAT they needed room for the fake DeLoren Briggs and Stratton powered hover craft!

BTW you didn't say anything in your ad about the nitrous bottle under the hood!

Has the IMSB been taken care of? I'm only interested if you have a notarized affidavit from Jake that he personally replaced the bearing and the engine is otherwise healthy.

Nah, the only place I posted it was in here. I'll probably get serious about selling it at the end of February. Other than BaT or one of the collector car auctions, it's tough to sell a "fun" car in November, December, January and February.

Even Billy has to be approved. The almighty and omnipotent Schnely apparently utilized his great wisdom to decide that all posts in this forum need approval. Even the mods need approval (though we can approve our own posts).
