951 Out of Body Shop After Spa Treatment

Post by FRUNKenstein » Thu Apr 23, 2020 10:17 pm

We bought our 951 back in 2011 to be my oldest son’s first car. He drove it through high school and 2 years of college. Then we got him a more modern car, and the 951 was relegated to a spot on the 4-post lift. It was what I’d call a 20-footer - lots of scratches, dents and dings. Last year I focused on mechanicals and interior. Two weeks ago, it went to my buddy’s shop with instructions to “make it look nice.” I don’t need concours condition, but it shouldn’t look out of place in the museum or at a car show. I just need to re-work the stereo system and detail the engine and take care of a couple of other minor things, then it will be what I’d call “done”.

Nice looking car. Too bad your guy didn't have some other color of paint so he could have covered that unusual original color.

Looks great! Always liked 944's and 968's - classic shape and they drive nice. Looks like this one is a keeper for sure.

Wait a second, reading between the lines here, am I seeing that the 951 is a reliable driver? Or did your kid not get out much?

Last I saw, the kid was rather fit. I can only assume it was from all the time he spent pushing the broken car around town.

Actually, it was a very reliable car. 3 years of high school and 2 years of college as a daily driver. We had to replace the half shafts (rear axles) and the power steering rack. Man, other than that, I think it was just regular maintenance - oil changes, breaks, timing belt . . . And it had a rough life. Routinely hauled around 4 teenage boys, hauled gear back and forth to college, lived in a fraternity parking lot for a year, had to replace a broken windshield, etc.

I know I'm jinxing myself, but I've had 7 Porsches in total, and they all were/are very reliable cars. In fact, it's hard to believe they come from the same company that pumps out Audis.

Next time it's going in give me a call and I'll make sure he understands the issue. ;)

My 996 is gonna need the "spa treatment" soon - it looks amazing from 15 feet...it looks tatty when you see all of the paint chips and worn paint behind the rear wheels...

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.

As much grief as the 996 gets, it was on the back of 12 years of little more than oil changes, tires, and brakes that convinced me to pull the trigger on the P!g. It too has been nice and reliable too.

After 20 years of Porsche ownership I firmly believe that regular use is better for keeping them running well.
