Edit: Mine is the Kenwood DMX-7704S. Looking online, this DMX-7705S is probably this year’s version of the same head unit.

$289.95 with free shipping. Has both Android Auto and Apple Car Play (no Android Auto on the Porsche unit).
That is about what I paid Crutchfield for my Sony unit. The install kit and the wiring harness were about $60 on top of that. I also had to replace all four of my speakers but I had done that before I did the double-din conversion.

Here - I will let you be the judge. It is certainly not perfect, but pretty close. Will be interested in your thoughts.

What's it look like on and at night?

Don't get me wrong, you being happy with it is all that matters. The wife and I are just uber picky (especially since some colors (turn of the century Audi red lighting for example) trigger her migraines pretty bad) ;)
Here are two night pictures - one with the home screen, one with the CarPlay screen. It was hard to get a picture to show the color well, but the orange is just about the same as the Porsche lighting LED’s.

Will get a couple of daytime pictures the next time the car is out of the garage (planning Tuesday for sure, may be tomorrow).

I just think it's freaking cool that Porsche is supporting their product with meaningful updates 20 years later. The fact that Porsche embraces their classic lines like this just adds to my pride of being an owner.

Daryll I think your install is about as clean as it can get with an aftermarket unit, good job dude.

This is where my head is at, too. I'm just too picky, especially with anything visual. Visual + My favorite thing = I get really, really picky. I'd pay $1700 just to have it match. Too bad I have an Android and I don't listen to music* in my 996.

Have you figured out how to get a Porsche crest or other customized logo to show up on the home screen? I started to look into that, but got busy and never followed up. From what I recall, though, there wasn't a real quick way to do it. It surely is possible because my old double din unit that I replaced had it set up. It was also a Kenwood, and was close to 10 years old when I swapped it out last year. So, the technology has to be in there and I have to believe it cannot be that hard to get done.

As I said in that other place, I got similar functionality (minus the giant distracting screen) for about $120 all in using this: https://www.discountcarstereo.com/a2d-b ... ory_id=451

I kept my stock radio in all its mustardy goodness, can stream audio from any Bluetooth enabled phone, and I didn't get a goddamn stimulus check.

Unfortunately I don’t think that Sony supports that function. Pretty sure that Kenwood and Alpine do but not sure. Wild guess - anything can be done, but likely it would have to be a flash update which is way beyond my capabilities. The reason that I picked the Sony was that it had decent specs as my car that the base/base/base stereo - no amp, no door speakers. The Sony has 4x25 watts of output - way more than enough for the little speakers. Also it has a volume knob, which I like - the higher end stuff all had either buttons or touch sliders, which I’m not a big fan of since there are no steering wheel controls.
Silly as it sounds, I may put a little Porsche crest above the unit - need to find out where I can buy one. That may make it look a little more “factory”. Failing that I may just get a Porsche sticker like Continental supplies with their radios.

Thank you - appreciate it! It was a good project considering that the last car stereo I installed was probably around 1985 or so. But the kits today are a million times better than the stuff available back then. Very little cutting was required, and if my car had PCM originally it would have been easier.

I’m usually not in favor of aftermarket stuff either but it is funny - except for the radio, our 996 cars are really as usable as a modern car. The Apple CarPlay upgrade solves that nicely. I see that the new Porsche PCCM also has Android which is nice. Also their single DIN unit is really slick - huge improvement over the prior PCCM unit.
