Re: Search For a 914

Good luck with the auction! Looks like a decent car, other than engine swap issue.
I'm not Cuda and didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I don't care for the GT flares. They just don't look right on the car.FRUNKenstein wrote: ↑Fri Jul 17, 2020 10:29 am So, assuming the Ravenna Green car goes nuts on BaT and ends up where I think it's going to end up ($20,000 wouldn't surprise me), then I'm out of the pool.
Side note - Cuda, if you are even remotely interested in selling your blue car, I would put it up on BaT right now. The prices those cars are pulling are ridiculous. Given what I've seen over the last 2 weeks on BaT, your blue car might well bring $25,000.
Anyhow, I'll keep an eye on it, but I'm not going over $18k on that car, and that's assuming I can even talk my wife into going that high. I don't see any chance that $18,000 is going to get that car on BaT. So, that puts me back on the lookout for a car that is solid, but needs a repaint. I ran across this car listed in Facebook Marketplace out in Big Spring, TX (west Texas). It is owned by a used car salesman who traded his personal VW Vanagon for it. He's had it listed for sale for a few months, but listed under "918 Spyder" rather than 914. So, I think it has been flying under the radar. He's asking $6,500. That puts it right in my "paint, interior & mechanical" for about $13k budget ($6,000 purchase price, $4,000 paint, $2,000 interior, $1,000 mechanical). It's a 1974 1.8 liter car. It has fiberglass GT flares, which I kinda like and kinda don't. They appear to be the nice ones that aren't grafted on - they are the entire quarter panel and front fender. You can buy matching rocker panel covers for about $200, which I'd probably do because they don't end abruptly at the bottom that way. The fit looks OK, but maybe a little off at the door handles.
It has been converted to carbs, which I'm not thrilled about, but it isn't a deal killer. He says it is in good running condition and up until the temps got real hot in Texas (no AC on it), he was daily driving it to work. The interior needs rehabbing, but again, I'm planning on that with pretty much any car that's going to need paint.
The 2 big pluses for me are:
1) He says it doesn't have rust. It is a west Texas car, so that's a good environment. If it truly is rust-free, then the $6,500 asking is very reasonable.
2) I see green paint peeking out around the door jamb on the driver's side. I'm disregarding the green on the inside of the sails because it was probably painted along with the "PORSCHE" letters on the engine cover. But, the door jamb green under the flaking white paint is very interesting. The owner i's currently out of town on vacation, but he's going to text me a picture of the paint code plate. If it is Ravenna Green (L65K), then I might buy it even if it has some rust. That would be amazing if it is a Ravenna Green car originally.
It's about a 10 hour drive down there. If the pictures that he's sending me come out looking good, and we can agree on a price, then I'll drive down there with my son and drag it back home. Actually, I'll probably just drop it off at the body shop for the repaint.
I am interested in your thoughts, both good & bad. Here are the pics I have now:
They'd look better if it had wheels that filled it out. As it stands it looks half assed and like it should have a fart can hanging out the back...32wildbilly wrote: ↑Fri Jul 17, 2020 1:18 pmI'm not Cuda and didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I don't care for the GT flares. Maybe. We had The Great Car Show at the National WWI museum today. Parked right across from me was this 1975 Laguna Blue 2.0. Owner currently has a phenomenal Jag XKE in our museum. Known guy, takes great car of his cars. Has a “for sale” sign in the window, asking $11,900. I have an appointment with him to see the car at 9:00 am.32wildbilly wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 6:44 pm BAT: Jul 19 at 5:19 PM $15,500 bid placed by eatonhong
