Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020
Anyone else enjoy spending some time in flight sims? I've got the new version of MS Flight downloading right now.
This is the version that uses GPS imagery to supplement 3D-rendered terrain for some areas. The results are spectacular, but there's a cost: I'm about 10GB into a 100GB base install.
Steam is set to use as much bandwidth as possible...my 4PM video meeting is going to suffer greatly, but I am willing to make that sacrifice.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.
Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.

Never done sims but some games and I usually crash before getting shot down. Harder than it looks. The screen shot you posted made me think of a time when a group of BNSF officials were touring NSRR mechanical facilities. We were somewhere east, maybe Virginia, reviewing two of their shops. When we left in the corporate jet that is almost exactly the view at the end of the runway! Pilot rotated, tucked the wheels and went almost vertical at full throttle. I about shat myself but we made it. Thank GOD the Gulfstream didn't hiccup as we would have been toast. Not fun! Nice thing about sims is if you biff it you can try again.5chn3ll wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 3:55 pm Anyone else enjoy spending some time in flight sims? Re: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020
I have been playing with Microsoft Flight Sim since the days of the Apple ][. I have used a lot of different versions, none lately. I also have a pilot's license and an instrument rating - to go with the pile of useless licenses and ratings I have collected.
I find the flight sim a lot harder to fly than any "real" airplane I have ever flown. It's damn near impossible to trim the simulator to fly hands off while that's usually trivially easy in an airplane. I end up using the autopilot in the sim more than I ever did in an airplane. Talking about SEP airplanes here, not bizjets or airliners.
The scenery in this version looks a little better than the Apple ][ version I remember.

Finally got it installed about 11PM last night. First impressions from about a minute of taxiing: my gaming rig can manage about 6 FPS with the default settings. I'm either going to need to tweak my rig or fly @ 320x240. In 16 colors.

Re: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020
I've been wanting to play this soooooo badly since it has been announced but I'm saving my fun pennies for a sim racing rig. I priced out one of those fancy-shmancy direct drive rigs. Standby for my post in 2 years The 996 has an appetite for my fun pennies.

Heh. Too rich for my blood, but I did just plunk down a bit of coin on Prime Day for a Gigabyte-branded 4GB GTX 1050Ti. I overclocked my poor little Radeon 6800 as much as I could this afternoon and jacked the quality up to "high" - the results were pretty but SLOW.

Cool! Can you fly the coast from Twentynine Palms to North Island at night? That was one of my favorite routes back in the day. Stunning views.

You're flying a f'n Malibu Mirage which is almost a $2mm plane and you can't afford a graphics card? What's this world coming to.5chn3ll wrote: ↑Wed Oct 14, 2020 6:18 pm Heh. I blew all my cash on the simulated fractional plane purchase. Stupid decision, in hindsight...I think simulated bankruptcy is in my future.
